Classic Car insurance is usually cheaper than ordinary car insurance, this is for several reasons.

  • The average classic car is looked after better by it's loving owner.
  • Classic cars are often only on the road in dry weather when there tend to be less accidents.
  • Classic cars often do very few miles per year.

Car insurance is something that almost all of us have to contend with. Over the lifetime of your car, you may have to pay out more for UK car insurance than the actual value of the car. If you are a young driver with a cheap car, you may actually have to pay out more in one year for your policy than the value of your car! So if you are a careful driver, do you need car insurance? The answer is definitely yes. Although figures show many thousands go without insurance, it is illegal under UK law, to have no car insurance and if you are caught, you will almost certainly be prosecuted. Also even if you are sure that you are a careful driver, what about the other person. If another person crashes into you and the police discover you have no car insurance, you will again almost certainly be prosecuted. Now that you have decided that you need a classic car insurance policy, click here for some guidelines to make that classic car insurance policy affordable.

Car Accident Advice

  • Decide what type of classic car insurance policy you require. It is important that you understand the difference between Third Party, Third Party, Fire and Theft and Fully Comprehensive car insurance. If your classic car is less valuable (under £1000), then perhaps one of the third party car insurances may be sufficient for your needs. This will cut down on the cost, but will mean that you will not be reimbursed for repair/replacement costs in the event that you make a claim. If another party is at fault in the accident, then you will claim from their policy.
  • Increase your excess. Most classic car insurance policies have a standard excess of £100. This means you pay the first £100 of any claim. Realistically though, you will not want to claim from your policy unless absolutely necessary as this will probably lead to increased future premiums. These future premiums may cost more in the long term than spending £200-300 of your own money to cover the cost of a claim. Some policies allow you to increase your excess by several hundred pounds, which will cut the cost of your policy. This however will mean that you will have to pay the first £200 or £300 pounds of any claim.
  • Garage. Many insurance premiums will give you a discount if your classic car is stored in a garage. If you have access to a garage use it.
  • Low mileage. If you do a low mileage, typically less than 5000 miles you many car insurance companies will give you a discount on your premium.
  • Named drivers. Usually except for spouses, car insurance companies will charge you extra to have additional drivers on your policy. If you have extra named drivers on you policy consider removing them, remember they will most likely be covered to drive your vehicle with third party cover if they have their own insurance.
  • Theft protection. Some car insurance companies will give a discount if you have a certain type of alarm or immobiliser fitted to your car. These companies usually specify a minimum of a Thatcham Category 2 fitted by a professional installer.
  • Cut out the extras. It may be possible in some circumstances to cut out the extras that you feel you do not require. Do you need a courtesy car/windscreen repair/towing service etc. If not you may be able to find a cheaper policy without these.

Remember you must not mislead your classic car insurance company in any way. Failure to mention convictions, modifications to the car, changes of address and a whole host of other things can lead to you being uninsured if your car insurance company discover them. Here are some of the questions car insurance companies will ask and why.

Car details: Some cars are easier to break into, provide less protection in a crash so there are more likely to be injuries, are more likely to be crashed (perhaps they are high performance) are more desirable to thieves. All these cars will attract a higher premium.

Your Details: If you are a man, are a younger driver, are an elderly driver, have had previous accidents/claims then you are more likely to make a claim and therefore these people will attract a higher premium. Your postcode will also affect your premium, if you live in areas of high car theft, your policy may cost much more.

No claims bonus: The more years without a claim, the less likely you are to claim.

Usage: Is the vehicle being used for pleasure, travelling to and from work, as part of your work or a combination of these? Each will attract a different premium.

Excess: As discussed above, the larger the excess, the cheaper the car insurance, but the more expensive things will be if you have to make a claim.

Cover: As we have seen, third party insurance tend to be cheapest, followed by third party fire and theft, followed by fully comprehensive. Remember though, you get what you pay for.

If you have not yet bought a classic car, have a look for a car with a low insurance group. The lower the insurance group number, the lower the insurance group. The lower the insurance group, the lower the insurance premium. This may eliminate that high performance road rocket that you were saving up for, but as some consolation usually a low insurance car will have a reasonable miles per gallon figure.

General Advice

The best piece of general advice that can be given about classic car insurance and you have heard it many times before is to shop around. If you get ten policy quotes the chances are that the most expensive will cost twice what the cheapest costs! That extra effort is worth it, think how many hours you would need to work to earn that amount, so spending 2 hours getting quotes is time well spent.

If you are with an insurance company you like and trust and you receive a lower quote from another company. Why not contact your current company at renewal time and ask them to match the offer. You will find that quite often they are prepared to do so.

Remember, all policies are not created equal. Check the small print to see what extras might be bundled in the policy that be useful to you for cars, windscreen insurance, courtesy car in the event of an accident, full european cover, protected no claims bonus etc.

Any insurance company no matter how reputable, will probably not pay out in the event of you providing misleading information. Again for cars, those alloy wheels you put on must be declared. If you are a student, you cannot claim you are living at your parents address even if you live there two days out of seven. Or if you claim you have a full no claims bonus but have not, then you could be in trouble if you have an accident.
